Coach Brian helped me see results in as little as two sessions! He showed me aspects of my throw where small changes lead to big improvements. In my senior year, I was able to add 13 feet to my discus throw through private coaching sessions, video analysis, and support during the biggest meets of my career. My season culminated with a trip to New Balance Nationals and breaking a 35 year old school record which had been my goals since day one of throwing discus.
Luckily, I found Brian before it was too late during my senior year of high school. He helped train me in shot and disc, adding significant distances to both. From junior to senior year, I added roughly 15 feet to my shot put throw alone. With this great improvement, I decided that track would then become my collegiate future. Working with him in both events, I was capable of making the transition from baseball to track, and qualify for All-States that year. Brian helped me become comfortable with the rotational throw of the discus, and outside of the circle, he provides great advice on training as well as college decisions. He is more than just a throwing coach, he is a life coach, and someone I truly look up to. Even though it is a 2 ½ hour drive for me, the amount of information I gain from training is worth every minute in the car and every penny for the coaching.
SlingSHOT Throws and Coach Brian helped me to compete at the NCAA Division 1 level. Without him, I would not be the thrower I am today. Knowing that he is always always a call or text away is comforting whenever I need advice for throwing and training! I have known Brian for a long time now, and his goal has always been to develop athletes to reach their goals, and help them create connections that will last a life time.
I have no idea where I’d be right now without your coaching. You’ve made me knowledgeable in the sport and have allowed me to help others out. I know the helplessness and frustration when your team coaches just can’t help you, and having a coach like you is literally life changing. It gives people genuine hope to get better. Us throwers are extremely lucky to have you, and I can’t thank and appreciate you enough.
Growing up in Maine, there was no private coaching until I met Brian my junior year. We began training together and despite not having a senior indoor season because of a pec injury, Brian was able to transform my throw from 57’10” to 64’3”. I ended my senior year by winning the Outdoor New England Championship in shot put, and broke that record in the process. Without Brian, I would not be the thrower I am today. I would not have the drive or knowledge in this sport that I do now. The sense of community alone at SlingSHOT is amazing, and with everyone reaching for a common goal of getting better it makes for a great place to train.
In the fall of 2018, I drove up to Maine from Massachusetts to meet with Coach Brian about a potential opportunity to find a throwing coach to take me to the next level. At the time, I was unaware of the impact Brian would have on my career as a thrower. I came to Brian with a personal best throw of 50’ in the shot, and by the time my high school career ended, I had a personal best throw of 67’, broke the all-time New England Indoor record, won and reset the meet record at the New England Championship, and won the 2019 New Balance Indoor National Championship. To this day, I am still shocked by this accomplishment.
While working with Coach Woodbury, I was able to experience new concepts and feelings in the ring that I hadn’t experienced before. The knowledge I gained from Brian not only helped while working with him, but also on my own while I was training at home.
Brian was with me through the whole process of creating a training plan to help me reach my goals, and helped me achieve a dream of becoming a Division 1 student-athlete. Brian taught me the value of getting an education, and instilled the value of hard work and dedication. Brian and his fiancée Tanya have created something truly special in the small town of Scarborough, Maine. They both are willing to work with their athletes and do whatever they can to make the training environment as effective as possible.
Like me, many athletes drive from all over New England because Brian a great coach inside the circle, as well as a phenomenal coach outside of the circle. Brian builds confidence in his athletes, and it is crucial in their success. For example, there were many days where I didn’t think I would ever break 60’ in a meet, but everyday Brian convinced me otherwise. He believes in his athletes and what they’re capable of, even when we might not believe in ourselves.
Brian is my coach, my mentor, and most importantly, a great friend. Thank you for everything Brian and Tanya!
